For larger repairs like this, you may need to use a two-part hardening putty. Wood putty is also used for major repairs like cracks in deck boards. It’s fantastic for touch-ups like hiding nail holes you missed during your prep work or even where wood filler has fallen out. It can be used to fill in minor blemishes like nicks, scratches, gouges, and gaps between joints. It’s often used to hide imperfections in finished furniture, molding, flooring, and exterior woodwork after the finish has been applied. Wood putty is a versatile product used for a variety of indoor and outdoor projects. You’ll want to choose a putty color that closely matches the stain color of your project for a flawless look. Many wood putty tones are available, such as mahogany, walnut, maple, and oak. For bigger projects, you’ll want a two-part putty that requires mixing with a hardener. Wood putty typically comes in a stick, which is ideal for fixing small holes. Because wood putty remains flexible, it expands and contracts along with the wood. Wood is affected by seasonal changes in temperature and humidity, causing it to shrink and swell. It can be used indoors or outdoors, but its flexibility is excellent for exterior projects. Wood putty dries slowly, but instead of hardening, it remains pliable when it’s completely dry. In other words, putty is used to repair imperfections that occur after your project has been stained and sealed with a top coat, such as polyurethane. Putty contains chemicals that can damage raw wood, so it’s best suited for finished projects. It’s made from a mixture of plastic and oil-based solvents like boiled linseed oil. Wood putty sometimes called “plastic wood” is a clay-like substance used to repair holes and gaps in wood.

That means over 90 percent of people who smoke the high-potency will be OK," he says. When stress continues to accumulate in a person’s life and they don’t have the skills and resources to cope with it, eventually something will have to give. "We think about 5 percent of people will go psychotic instead of 1 percent. A recent study he published in The Lancet suggests that abusing marijuana with around 15 percent THC content, which is common among growers today, could quintuple the risk for schizophrenia. Murray says that only strengthens the case that cannabis increases the risk for schizophrenia. that may have to do with a much more potent marijuana." Black market, medical and recreational marijuana have all been steadily increasing their THC content over the past decade, and according to national emergency department data, visits involving cannabis increased 52 percent from 2004 to 2011. Volkow says there's been a "very dramatic increase. The fraction of people who have the disorder still hovers at around 1 percent.īut public health officials say they have seen an increase in the number of blazed people showing up to the emergency room in the grip of a fleeting psychotic episode. If the connection between weed and schizophrenia is solid, then the number of people with schizophrenia should also be going up. One thing to note, Lisdahl says, is that more people smoke cannabis today than ever in history. "Some experts believe that might induce schizophrenia in someone who wasn't vulnerable, but in my opinion that hasn't really been proven." "It does look like there is an increased risk for schizophrenia" from smoking weed overall, Lisdahl says. Shots - Health News Colorado Tries Hard To Convince Teens That Pot Is Bad For You But for someone without those genes, Volkow says the evidence suggests "you can smoke all the marijuana you want and it will make no difference whatsoever." " She says when people with certain risky genes associated with psychosis smoke, the risk of developing schizophrenia goes up sixfold, according to a 2005 study. "But what is also clear, if you do have a vulnerability to schizophrenia and you smoke ," Volkow says, "it's likely to trigger an episode. That makes it difficult to say if the people in these experiments developed schizophrenia because they were smoking weed or because of other factors. At least one other study found that people with schizophrenia were more likely to have a drug addiction in general. Cannabis smokers also are more likely to use other drugs, including ones that are known to induce brief psychotic episodes. There are other problems with these studies as well. It's only after you see all the patients that go psychotic that you realize – it's not so safe."Īround the Nation Getting High Safely: Aspen Launches Marijuana Education Campaign "Even I, 20 years ago, used to tell patients that cannabis is safe. Sir Robin Murray, a psychiatrist at King's College in London, says that evidence changed his mind about weed. There have been nine studies following hundreds to thousands of people for decades looking for a connection between marijuana use and psychosis.Īll but one of these studies suggest that marijuana use is associated with schizophrenia. Still, some researchers are convinced that marijuana contributes to the development of schizophrenia. "It's very distressing, but you'll get out of it." "You can have a psychotic episode from the use of marijuana without it turning into schizophrenia," Volkow says. But that's very different from a chronic, persistent psychotic disorder like schizophrenia. Drugs like marijuana or methamphetamine can make someone experience symptoms like paranoia, hostility and disorganized thinking. Volkow says it's important to make that distinction. What is Acrylic Overlay?Īn Acrylic full-set, also known as nail extensions, is the most popular and will usually be put on top of thetip extensions, adding length or using nail forms to achieve a more natural look. Observers say the Taliban’s intensifying rivalry with IS-K has signaled the beginning of another phase of war in Afghanistan. “IS-K will be looking to convince these communities that they cannot trust the Taliban and that joining IS-K is their only option.” “This is a historically marginalized population under the Taliban,” he adds. “IS-K has launched dozens of attacks, and subsequent Taliban reprisals have targeted local Salafist communities,” says Andrew Mines, a research fellow at George Washington University in Washington. Many Taliban leaders are followers of the 19th-century Deobandi Movement of British Colonial India, a hard-line strain of Hanafi Islam. It is followed by about one-third of the world’s Muslims, making it the school with the most adherents. The Hanafi school of Sunni Islam dominates Afghanistan and the wider South Asia and Central Asia region. Since then, Salafist schools and mosques have been built with funds from rich Arab states. Salafism emerged in Afghanistan during the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan, when Arab Salafists arrived to fight alongside the mujahedin, the Islamist factions fighting against Soviet forces. It has been linked to IS-K, its rival Al-Qaeda, and other transnational militant groups. It first emerged in the 18th century on the Arabian Peninsula. The Salafist sect is a strict orthodox Islamic revivalist movement. “The message calls on all those who have been involved in destructive activities against the Islamic Emirate in the past or present to return to their homes and areas and apologize,” it read. The tweet cited a recent message attributed to Taliban chief Mullah Haibatullah Akhundzada. “Members of the former army, police, intelligence and the Kharijites have once again been assured of the general amnesty,” the Taliban media center in Nangarhar tweeted on October 20. Taliban officials have referred to Salafists as Kharijites, members of an early radical Islamic sect that are widely considered renegades. Observers say the Taliban’s deadly crackdown on Salafists could backfire and be used by IS-K as a recruiting tool. The Taliban, which many Salafists blamed for the killing, denied it was responsible. In September, a senior Salafist cleric in Afghanistan, Sheikh Abu Obaidullah Mutawakil, was abducted and then found dead days later. “The Taliban view every Salafist as a member of Daesh, which is unfair because not everyone who follows the Hanafi faith is a Taliban member,” Hakimullah says. Even if you don’t plan on storing your crumb coated cake in the fridge overnight, I highly recommend letting it firm up in the fridge for at least 30 minutes before you add your final layer of frosting. Here’s everything you need to know about how and why I crumb coat my cakes. I always like to add my final layer of frosting to a chilled crumb coated cake anyways, because having a nice firm structure underneath the final layer is one of the secrets to creating a smooth buttercream finish. The thin layer of buttercream acts as a barrier to preserve the cake underneath and help it maintain its moisture. This will bring it back to frosting consistency and you’ll be ready to roll! Storing Crumb Coated CakesĪfter you’ve filled and frosted your cake with a crumb coat, it’s safe to store it in the refrigerator overnight without the risk of drying out the cake. When you’re ready to use it, bring it back to room temperature by placing it on the counter for an hour or two. Once it reaches room temperature, add it back into your stand mixer and mix it on low speed for about a minute. To make your buttercream frosting ahead of time, simply place it in an airtight container and keep it in the refrigerator for up to two weeks before decorating day. This way, any excess condensation will escape and gather on top of the foil, which acts as a barrier to keep the cake beneath it from getting soggy. Then, on decorating day, remove all the wrapping and you’ll have your cake layers thawed and ready to go! Making Buttercream Ahead Remove them from the ziploc bag, but keep them in their aluminum foil/plastic wrap covering. When you’re ready to use them, simply take the cake layers out of the freezer the day before decorating to thaw them. To ensure they stay extra fresh, I like to wrap the cake layers in one layer of plastic wrap, then one layer of aluminum foil, then place them into a ziploc bag (or other airtight container that can go in the freezer). As long as you wrap them properly, they will keep for up to two months in the freezer and once thawed will taste just as fresh as the day you baked them! Talk about a cake hack. Again, it’s important that you let the cakes cool completely before wrapping them up. If you’re baking your cakes more than two days ahead of time, I recommend freezing your cake layers. Nobody wants a soggy cake! Freezing Cake Layers Just be sure to wait until they’re completely cooled before wrapping them in plastic wrap, as the steam from a hot cake layer can create excess condensation in the storage process. If you’re baking your cakes a day or two ahead of decorating day, you can store them at room temperature as long as they’re wrapped tightly in plastic wrap. Instead, there are a few options for baking your cake layers and storing them properly so they’re ready to go on decorating day: Storing at Room Temperature This means padding in those extra hours of cooling time into your overall timeline, which can end up taking a lot of your day if you’re doing all of it the day of. Because of this, you’ve got to give your cakes a few hours to cool after they come out of the oven. When you’re building a cake, it’s ultra important that your cake layers are room temperature and not even a little bit warm (trust me, your frosting will melt). In addition to the basics, you’ll also find my favorite recipes and cake decorating tutorials to broaden your skill set! Storing Unfrosted Cake Layers I’ve gathered them all in the video below, so give it a watch before reading on to commit these make ahead tips to memory.Īnd side note: if you’re wanting to learn more Cake Basics, be sure to check out my YouTube channel and hit the Subscribe button so you never miss a new one. There are a few different methods and preferences on the subject that vary from baker to baker, and the purpose of this post is to talk about my own preferred methods. This way, maybe you won’t find yourself up at 2am agonizing over an unfinished cake!įirst, let’s talk about some make ahead tips for baking cake layers, making frosting, and storing it all so it’s ready to go when you’re ready to decorate. Can you relate? In hopes of sparing you some of that added stress, I’ve put together my best tips for making a timeline and working ahead. I can remember many stressful nights (and even a few panic attacks) from my years of running a cake business from home and most of them stemmed from not giving myself enough time to enjoy the process. That said, I know how incredibly stressful cake can be when you’re running short on time and/or things just aren’t going the way you wanted – especially if said cake is an order. I’m a big advocate of cake making as a means to reduce stress and have fun. Consider a few alternative uses for your mesh laundry bags.To make sorting clothing in your laundry room easier, consider hanging S hooks from your laundry room shelving and placing the mesh bags on the hooks. The strings can get caught and cause damage to parts of your washer or to any other clothes in the wash at the time. Avoid using laundry bags with drawstrings in the washing machine. In order for the clothes to get clean, they need to have space to move around. Never overfill your laundry bag before washing. Waterproof designs may only require a wipe down with a soft soapy sponge instead of being fully submerged in a washing machine full of water. Although some laundry bags are safe to toss in your washing machine, they are not recommended for the high heat setting in your dryer. Always refer to the product label for cleaning instructions. These bags are waterproof, so your devices are safe from splashes if you’re visiting a beach or lake resort. You may even find a set that comes with a special bag for storing your digital devices. They are excellent for carrying to the laundromat or for organizing clothing to fit in a suitcase. For example, some laundry bags or laundry cubes actually have handles that make them portable. Simplemost MediaĬonsider any additional uses you may want the laundry bags to perform. Since zippers can get caught on other clothing in the washing machine, you’ll need a bag with a fold-over top to cover up the zipper. Pay attention to how the laundry bags close. This way, you have smaller bags for your socks and undergarments and larger bags for your blouses. You’ll find some sets come in up to four sizes, often with colored zippers that identify the size. Next, make sure that your laundry bag set comes with bags in different sizes. The bag expands as you add to it and has a drawstring for closing the bag once it’s full. While you’re away, you place your dirty laundry in the bag. It folds up small, so you can toss it in your suitcase. This type of bag is designed specifically for travel. You may opt for a bag that isn’t made of mesh. This is especially helpful when traveling and going through airport security. This fabric is washable and allows users to clearly see which laundry items are in the bag. Ideally, it should be constructed out of a mesh material that is see-through. Start by examining the fabric the laundry bag is made out of. If you’d like to give laundry bags a try, there are a few things you’ll want to be on the look out for as you shop. Laundry bags can be used to transport laundry to a laundromat or to collect soiled garments during a vacation. In addition to keeping socks from magically disappearing during a cycle in the dryer, these bags protect undergarments with hooks and straps from getting snagged during washing and drying. Laundry bags are a handy invention that help folks tackle their wash with ease. For Packer, spiritual formation is a healthy obsession with Christ, which reveals God’s love through the work of the Spirit as essence of the Gospel. Spiritual formation thus includes a radically changed behaviour because we must always be catechists, confessors of Christ. When we are Christ’s disciples and slaves, we become catechists and we are able to teach others about Christ by finding happiness in pursuing the only path leading to God in Christ through catechesis. Spiritual formation is not complete until, as Packer makes it clear, we follow Christ not only as disciples but also as slaves. We must also learn how to live under Christ’s authority in order to become Christ’s disciples. As part of our spiritual formation, we must learn about God’s truth, about his revelation to us in history, and this is a process that requires personal intellectual efforts. What follows after conversion is growth, when we grow into our spiritual formation by becoming more aware of God through intense study and informed discernment. Packer insists that spiritual formation is a process which begins with God, when we are helped by God’s Spirit to turn to Christ through conversion. |
